Records for the territory of Tennessee County, NC are in Clarksville, Montgomery Co. TN. (I was told by Yolanda, librarian of Robertson Co. Archives, Springville, TN)
1769 General James Robertson was the patriach of Wautauga and the founder of the Cumberland settlements. He was a native of NC and came to TN in 1769. At the time of his death he was the US Agent to the Chickasaw Indians. (Ramseys Annals...)
COLONIAL ROADS 1775-1795 by Dollarhide pg 13 shows a road going from Hillsboro NC to Salem NC, to Jonesboro TN, to Knoxville TN and proceeding west from there. This may have been the route the Caswell NC McIntoshes followed to the Red River TN settlements.
The land situation in Tennessee was peculiar. TN had been settled partly under treaty with Indians and the state of Franklin and the inhabitants were without perfect titles to land. (Ramsey's Annals.)
In 1776 TN was Washington District, NC. In 1777 Washington Co. NC was established. The first Washington Co. court was held 1778. In 1779 James Robertson of Wautauga led settlers to the Cumberland Valley. (TN Before 1800 FHL 976.855 P2f)
In 1780 the extension of the boundary between NC and VA threw a large settlement that had considered itself in VA into NC (TN Soldiers in the Revolution-Penelope Johnson Allen )
In 1780 NC began paying claims to soldiers in the Revolutionary War. In 1782 NC passed a bill for the relief of soldiers. In 1783 a land office in Hillsboro, Orange, NC, was opened for the redemption of certificates for land. (TN Soldiers in the Revolution-P. J. Allen)

At the 28 Nov 1785 Treaty of Hopewell between Commissioners and Indian Chiefs, a Lachlan McIntosh was one of the commissioners. (History of Davidson Co. TN by W. W. Clayton, pg 56)
Pre 1786, the Springfield area in Davidson Co., NC, was sometimes referred to as Mero District. In 1786 it was created TN Co., NC.

In 1789 Davidson, Sumner, and Tennessee were counties of North Carolina. These 3 Cumberland counties constituted Mero District (Ramseys Annals of Tennessee)
1789 Thomas McIntosh and Benjamin McIntosh are on a list of persons who apparently were taxed-Thomas 100 and Benjamin 50, paid for the paying of the militia employed in cutting the road and escorting families from the town and of Clinch Mountain to the Cumberland Settlements August 25 1789. Thomas & Benjamin are not mentioned as having taxable property in Sumner TN in 1787. (Sumner TN Website)

For 14 years there was constant warfare. The Etowah campaign penetrated to the most southern towns of the Cherokees and the victory at Nickajack and Running Water broke the spirit of the Indians. There was little mischief afterwards until the War of 1812. (Ramseys Annals...)

When Tennessee was made a state in 1796 it was laid off in 3 districts-Washington, Hamilton, and Mero, to meet at Jonesboro, Knoxville, and Nashville. Andrew Jackson was the Davidson County representative from TN to Congress. In 1797 TN was made one district-Tennessee District. (Ramseys Annals...)

15 Mar 1799 (26 Jul 1798) John White was the security for Benjamin McIntosh who owed Joseph Woodall $160 to be paid yesterday which he failed to do. Benjamin binds himself to give John White 75 acres where the Town of Springfield is established if Benjamin does not discharge the debt to John White within one year. 15 Mar 1799 (25 Jan 1799) Benjamin McIntosh sells John White 70 acres adjoining Springfield for $160. Robertson TN Deeds Bk B p 212. (FHL Film # 422470) This is the last land entry I was able to find for Benjamin McIntosh, whom I believe to be brother to Thomas, John, Charles and Nimrod McIntosh. Hereafter he appears to be in Illinois.
15 Apr 1799 Will of Alexander McIntosh decd proven by Bazel Boren. Wife Elizabeth McIntosh granted letters of administration. Gave bond with John McIntosh her security. He asked that his joining tools be divided equally among his children and after the death of his wife the remainder of his property (he mentiond real and personal property-real indicates that he owned land) be sold and the proceeds divided equally among his chidren. 27 Jan 1806 George Browning married Sally McIntosh. Reuben Nowell signed. (Sumner Co. TN Marriages.) It is believed Sally is daughter of Thomas McIntosh who sold 50 acres of land each for $1 in 1814 to his son and sons-in-laws and George Browning was one of those. However, in his will April 1839 Thomas McIntosh named his daughter Sarah Scholes and Joseph Scholes was named as one of his executors.

Notice that Thomas McIntosh has just sold approximately 50 acres for $1 to his son Benjamin McIntosh, and to his sons-in-law Garret Flippo and Elias Cotton. He has also sold approximately 50 acres for $1 to George Browning which suggests George is a son-in-law also. A George Browning did marry a Sally McIntosh 27 Jan 1806 Sumner TN. Thomas also sold 60 acres to Elizabeth Muchelhaney for $1. Could Elizabeth be a daughter who married a Muchelhaney and her husband is dead? Or the couple have separated? Or does she have some other connection to Thomas? Elizabeth is not mentioned in Thomas's will in Apr 1837.

Sept Court 1815 will of Benjamin McIntosh presented for probate Johnson County, Illinois. Wife Frances, Dau Betsy, children Unity, Ceny, Stacy, sons Benjamin, Joshua, and Charles. (FHL Film # 1316478 Johnson IL Commissioners Reports) Benjamin is believed to be a brother to John, Thomas, Charles & Nimrod McIntosh of Robertson TN and who appears in IL records in 1807. In Oct 1823 an heir of Benjamin vs John Stokes & wife, administrators of Benjamin's estate, dropped the suit. They had been waiting for a deposition from Nimrod McIntosh of Robertson, TN.

Mrs. Elizabeth Holman and had 2 children. She had one by a former husband. G.W.C. lived with grandparnets 4 years after mother died but returned to father on 2nd marriage. Of age he farmed. Moved with parents to Todd KY abt 1842. Lived there until 1860. Moved with Dr. Perkins to Ballard Co. Worked 3 years. Pat Greenwood, "mailto:greenwpat@aol.com", reminds us that in the cemetery records of Robertson TN, there is a record of Nimrod McIntosh-1761-Nov 1844; Nancy McIntosh-1760-1843; and a daughter, Nancy McIntosh 1799-1830. Pat feels that the daughter Nancy must have died without issue as she is not mentioned in an 1847 circuit court case concerning heirs of Nimrod.
Nimrod and Nancy are buried in a McIntosh Cemetery in Robertson Co. TN. Turn off highway 41--first road past Growers Tobacco Warehouse. Follow this road about 1 mile. The cemetery is located on the left about 200 yards from the road. In June of 2000 the cemetery was in a small grove of trees in a wheat field.
